STUDIO POTTERY WINTER /SPRING
NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2008 |

The sun shone brilliantly today
a welcome treat as we
slog our way through the month of March. We also witnessed the delightful sight
of three bluebirds flying across the road to perch in an old apple tree. They,
too, are celebrating this mild winter day, grateful for a break from the cold
temperatures that have assailed us all this past week. We have been taking a
winter break since Christmas: time off from pottery production and a chance to
tackle some of the household chores which we normally put off during the
busiest time of the fall and holiday season. This year we also decided to
accept the kind and generous offer of friends who invited us to visit them in
Maui. Unfortunately, due to a family emergency, our Hawaiian vacation turned
out to be one of the shortest on record. (Next time we hope to spend more than
one day in paradise!) Elliott has
accepted a teaching position at the University of Pennsylvania at Bradford.
Every Tuesday and Thursday finds her sharing her knowledge of clay with a great
bunch of students who are taking Ceramics I for the spring semester. Michael
has been working hard training for the half marathon he had hoped to run in
Hawaii on Feb. 9 - the Run for the Whales, sponsored by the Pacific Whale
Foundation. Now he will have to look ahead to another running venue
perhaps a full marathon later in the year. |

Soon we will be back in production in the studio getting ready
for the 2008 pottery season. We have applied to several summer art shows and
are waiting to hear of our acceptance to the Allentown Art Festival and the
Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts. (One can never be sure about a juried show
until the acceptance letter arrives in the mail.) We are also getting excited
about participating in something brand new this year. The Cattaraugus County
Arts Council has organized an open studio tour called Routes to Art, a regional
tour of artists' studios throughout our rural county as well as in northern
Pennsylvania. We will join with thirty-four other artists who will invite the
public into their individual studios during the third weekend of May (Saturday
& Sunday, May 17-18, 10am - 5pm). It will be a great opportunity to see
many talented artists at work in a variety of media including pottery, weaving,
photography, painting, etc. For more information, contact
www.routestoart.com or call the CCAC
at 716-372-7455 for a copy of the brochure and map.

Our studio will be reopening for the season this year on
Thursday, May 1. As always, we welcome visitors to come and see a wide variety
of functional stoneware pieces on display in the studio showroom. Elliott may
be hard at work throwing on the potter's wheel, or glazing, or preparing clay;
Michael may be found loading or firing the kiln, or perhaps fixing a piece of
equipment that needs attention. Or you may find us out of doors digging and
planting in the garden. Either way, we encourage you to shake off the winter
blahs and take a ride in the beautiful rural countryside in which we live. Come
and enjoy a day in East Otto Country!
Hog-Shed Studio Pottery
is located at 8420 Otto-Maples Rd. (CR #13) just eight miles northwest of
Ellicottville. The showroom is open by appointment until May 1, 2008. Call
(716) 257 9549. |
